Fort Saskatchewan Metals Facility

This website is designed to provide the public with information in support of Sherritt International Corporation’s application to Alberta’s regulator for Fort Saskatchewan Metals Facility’s Operating Approval Renewal.

In 2017, Sherritt and its predecessor companies are celebrating their proud and rich 90-year history as one of the oldest Canadian natural resource developers. Today, Sherritt is a global leader in the mining, processing and refining of lateritic nickel and cobalt with operations in Canada, Cuba and Madagascar. The refinery in Fort Saskatchewan treats imported feeds to produce high-purity nickel and cobalt products for export sales. Our efficient metals process generates a fertilizer by-product, creating a value-add business that helps feed our growing population. In fact, Sherritt’s Fort Saskatchewan refinery was the first fertilizer producer in Alberta.

Operating Approval Renewal

The Fort Site operates under a 10-year approval issued by Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP). In 2009, Sherritt renewed their regulatory approval under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) (Approval No. 211-02-11), which will expire on January 31, 2019. The regulatory process expects the operator of the facility to demonstrate compliance to AEP ensuring all environmental regulatory requirements are being met. Since the last approval there has been no site expansion and/or significant changes related to operations, therefore public engagement will be focused on providing information about the site’s operational activities and addressing any environmental concerns that may arise from external stakeholders.
